Somewhere Over the Rainbow…in Vermont

Guest blog by Laura Duquette

Yes, we have all heard that famous tune, sung by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz, as she played a young girl dreaming of a bigger, more exciting world beyond her quiet, little Kansas farm town. We have all felt that longing for something bigger and better: a goal to be met or a place where we wish we found ourselves. Especially during a crisis, it is easy to daydream about that special place or time. Many of the children at Kurn Hattin Homes have experienced situations that even adults would find extremely challenging. Before Kurn Hattin, they really could only dream of that “land that I heard of once in a lullaby”, that happy, colorful world without pain, without fear, and without anxiety. How many of us as children and young adults have also wished upon that star and hoped we would “wake up where the clouds [were] far behind?” Before Kurn Hattin, that hope of a happier place was probably just a glimmer in their hearts.

Kurn Hattin Homes provides a stable and nurturing environment for children who come from troubled homes. We all know this. We have heard it, and we have read it. But have we truly taken the time to think about what that really means for a child? A child does not have the same concept of time as adults do. A feeling of sadness, despair or hopelessness over time can feel like forever without a way out! The time and experiences at Kurn Hattin allow children to experience HOPE, not just of a brighter future in years to come. Kurn Hattin today for a child may be that place where a friendship was found, that time when a new hobby was learned (like playing an instrument or drawing or riding a bike), or that day when a boy or girl woke up smiling as they looked forward in anticipation to what good things might come!

While surely their troubles can’t just “melt like lemon drops”, Kurn Hattin provides the children the space, the encouragement and the support for them to be able to truly believe that “the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true!” Yes, it is true! Just look at their smiles, and that is where you will find the expression of that hope and that joy of realized dreams!

Please make a donation today to change the life of a child for the better, not just for his or her tomorrows but also for their todays! Thank you for your continued support and generosity! Thanks to you, the children CAN find that place “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, right here in Vermont!
